New York Senator Malcolm A. Smith joined Knicks and Nets fans and season ticket holders, as they request a full refund for the whole season due to the NBA Walkout. They also unveiled a 6 foot petition for over 1 million fans to sign in front of Madison Square Garden. A upcoming National Basketball Solidarity Day was announced that will take place in arenas and stadiums across the nation. That will be December 11, 2011.

Officials from the United Restaurant and Tavern Owners Association along with other New York City merchants and vendors, gave a news conference after losing over million dollars worth of revenue due to the cancellation of basketball games . The Association represents over 3,000 bars and restaurants in the tri-state area.

O'Hurley's own, Paul Hurley along with Paddy McCarthy spoke on how the walkout has affected business. They said sales are way down. Martin Silver, owner of Georgi Vodka, and also a season ticket holder, said the walkout is also hurting his sales, because the restaurants and taverns order less Georgi Vodka, due to the business loss. When Silver was asked how much his two season tickets cost, he replied 40 thousand dollars. When New York Senator Malcolm Smith was asked if he had season tickets, he replied, "I Can't afford them".

REAL NUMBERS BEHIND CHRISTMAS SPENDING

$

****
THE CHICAGO GOSSIP

Story By: Kathy Posner
****

Presents Under Kathy Posner's Christmas Tree

According to Marilyn Vos Savant’s column in Parade Magazine, total consumer spending accounts for about 70% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This spending includes housing, transportation, food clothing, etc. In 2008, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average household expenditure was approximately $50,486.

The National Retail Federation reports that consumers spent an average of $508 on holiday gifts last year. If we play with the numbers, that means that only .74% (¾ of one percent) of the economy is represented by holiday spending.

I am confused!

If holiday spending is such an infinitesimal part of the GDP, why does the media make such a big deal about Black Friday and holiday shopping expenditures? Why are every retailer’s cash register sales closely scrutinized, and online spending analyzed ad nauseum? The numbers prove that holiday spending has virtually no impact on our economy, yet the media wants us to believe otherwise. We are being “scared” into shopping, afraid if we don’t buy that extra teddy bear for little Jimmy’s stocking, the country’s economy will collapse.

We are bombarded with useless information. For example, a Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey reports that with less than two weeks to go before Christmas Day, 60% of Americans have at least started their holiday shopping. Also, thirty-eight percent (38%) of adults say they have not yet started shopping. Just one-out-of-five Americans (21%) have finished their holiday shopping, while 75% still have shopping to do.

Oh, no! Seventy-five percent of people still have not done their holiday shopping!? These people are smart. The closer to Christmas that people wait, the better the bargains become. The smartest shopper does his holiday buying on January 2nd and saves the presents for the following Christmas.

The statistic that annoys me the most is the one that reports that, when they are out shopping, 72% of people prefer to see signs wishing them a “Merry Christmas” rather than ones that say "Happy Holidays." Why should it matter what a sign has printed on it? All that matters for this or for any season is that we are all healthy. Wealthy and wise wouldn’t hurt either!

Read More From Planet Posner Here....

James Edstrom's Note: I agree with these numbers. I also agree with the fact that you can find better deals other times of the year from retailers. I checked out Black Friday and Cyber Monday and found very little of any kind of deal. I see better offers during the winter time. Black Friday is a farce. I remember one year I went all the way to Brooklyn to Target for a great deal on a TV and they were out, even know I was there early. I grabbed some store manager and he said they only had 6 in stock of the sale item in the first place. It's all about getting you excited for nothing. They brainwash you and you think you are getting a deal.

Always Stunning Holly Madison

Holly Madison Skates Up

It was a "Holly Jolly Christmas" as Holly Madison laced up her skates and took a spin on the outdoor ice skating rink at Winter in Venice at The Venetian Las Vegas. Dressed in a pink sweater and festive scarf, the PEEPSHOW star glided along the ice while fans gathered around the rink, located at Doge's Palace adjacent to the outdoor gondolas. After showing off her skating skills, Madison mingled with holiday characters and enjoyed a chocolate gelato.

The majestic ice skating rink is just one of the many ways guests can experience Winter in Venice at The Venetian and The Palazzo this holiday season, taking place now through Jan. 8. Winter in Venice is the first true celebration of the winter season on the Las Vegas Strip, with 49 days of holiday festivities throughout both resorts, including strolling carolers, candy cane stilt walkers, puppets, jugglers, magicians, the Nightly Spectacular holiday show and an awe-inspiring 65-foot LED holiday tree.

LES MIS MYSTERY -- With names such as Taylor Swift, Scarlett Johansson, Lea Michele and Evan Rachel Wood all in the running to essay Eponine, in the forthcoming Tom Hooper-directed big-screen version of Les Miserables, the role seems destined to be a goldmine for whoever is chosen. We love Swift, but clearly if she is chosen, it'll turn into one big tween-event. Michele is a wild card choice too, but her Glee-cred could detract from the brilliant story line. Johansson on the other hand, would certainly bring a welcomed dramatic edge to the event, but we think Wood is the wise choice. According to reports, each actress knocked their audition out of the park. Whoever is chosen will join a star-studded cast, including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne and Geoffrey Rush.

MUNSTER YOU SAY -- NBC’s forthcoming re-boot of the 1960’s comedy The Munsters is a go and will be directed and executive produced by Superman Returns-helmer Bryan Singer (remember how well that did?). The whole re-imagining has been done by Bryan Fuller who did the terrific showing Pushing Daisies. The Munsters calls for striking visuals mixed with all the classic-characters from the show. But, don't forget, Daisies was also helmed by visionary-director Barry Sonnenfeld, who earned an Emmy for his work and really did an outstanding job. In fact, some would argue that it looked so much better than it read. This will be one to watch for sure! To tell you the truth, after the re-boots of Charlie’s Angels and Hawaii Five-O – one that worked and one that didn't, I don't know whether I would have picked The Munsters. What’s next? Bewitched and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.?

CHICAGO ON CALL -- Monday night we attended the Musicians On Call event at B.B. King’s featuring the legendary group Chicago. Believe it or not, we had never seen the band before; even though I well recall playing many of their records when I was in college (!!!). Songs like “Beginnings” and “Colour My World” were progressive rock staples back then; but, I had some apprehensions about seeing them all these years later. Truth be told; many of these so-called legacy acts somewhat disappoint in concert … playing their hits by the numbers and certainly not rising to the live occasion at all. Chicago played a stunningly good show that touched successfully on all their hits and demonstrated that, even though there are just four of the original members left; their legacy is as pristine as ever and each musician played terrifically well. On a personal note: hearing all those original songs again … and, with a renewed vigor, was monumentally inspiring. The legendary group which began life as the Chicago Transit Authority was an anomaly right from the start; what band back then, had horns? (actually, the only other band that comes to mind were the Ides of March who’s big hit was the great song "Vehicle"). Chicago’s musical preparation was surprisingly intricate and that was one of the first things I noticed and appreciated about the band back then: how thought-out everything was. Surely, “Beginnings” was a tremendous song; both lyrically and musically. Hearing it again last night made me realize all over again … how really superb it is. Robert Lamm, one of the original members, was as good as ever. He is without a doubt the backbone of the group and even though he performed mostly on keyboards, his rhythmic guitar work on “Beginnings” was just terrific. I met him, for the first time, right before the show and afterwards realized I should have commented on his first self-titled solo album in 1974 (Skinny Boy). My memory is that it was just excellent. In addition to “Beginnings,” Lamm also wrote “Does Anyone Really Know What Time It Is?,” “Saturday in the Park,” “Dialogue,” and “25 or 6 to 4” … surely among the group’s more complex and provocative songs. The trio of horn/woodwind players (all the original members as well): Lee Loughnane, James Pankow, and Walter Parazaider were just outstanding. It’s funny, usually with bands that do employ horns, the players are staggered somewhere to the left or right of the stage; with these three, they're front and center, gesticulating with their hands and horns, and although it’s a shock at first … it gets real pleasing, real fast. These three, who obviously have eaten, breathed and lived Chicago for years, are the true heart and soul of the band; especially Pankow, who was all over stage. The original-members, now, dare I say in their late-middle age, were just terrific; my hat’s off to them. But, I guess working with stellar musicians and performing great material is the trick. Lamm mentioned the group's new Xmas album (O Christmas Three), which is surprisingly vibrant, was produced in fine fashion to legendary knob-twirler Phil Ramone. They performed several numbers from it ("My Favorite Things" and "I'll Be Home For Christmas"), but not before Lamm hyped the fact,"that these days, bands have web-sites ... not labels." Funny stuff ... and, right on the mark. “Street Player,” “Hard Habit,” “Old Days,” “Call On Me,” Hard To Say,” and a surprisingly vibrant re-tread of the old Spencer Davis hit "I’m A Man” (featuring a great Chris Wood-inspired flute solo from Parazaider) was superb. As I said, the band was just excellent, guitarist Keith Howland and keyboardist Lou Pardini perfectly re-created ex-member Peter Cetera’s vocals. It was all terrifically impressive. Also, drummer Tris Imboden and percussionist Drew Hester just brilliant. Here’s to Chicago … one of he best concerts I've seen this year! We saw our friendTom Cuddy who helped organize the event; PR-pasha David Salidor; and, Alissa Pollack, and Tom Poleman. Visit www.chicagotheband.com.

GARY OLDMAN TALKS TO THE NEW YORK TIMES

NYC POLICE DEPARTMENT IN BED WITH MOB ?

Yesterdays raid on several strip clubs, including Cheetahs right across the street, must have some New York City cops running for the hills.

The feds busted up a mob-run ring that allegedly lured Eastern European women to work at strip clubs in New York and arranged sham weddings for them, the U.S. District Attorney's office said yesterday.

Twenty people were taken down in the bust - including seven mobsters from the Gambino and Bonanno families - and slapped with charges including extortion, transporting and harboring illegal immigrants, racketeering, visa and marriage fraud.

"The defendants themselves had one thing in common -- the desire to turn the women they allegedly helped enter this country illegally into their personal profit centers," said U.S. District Attorney for Manhattan Preet Bharara. "Today's arrests have brought an end to their illicit activities."

Prosecutors said the ring controlled clubs in Manhattan, Queens and Long Island, and that they would recruit women through newspaper ads and social networks to work as waitresses and hostesses. But when they got to the U.S., the alleged mobsters sent the women to work at clubs such as Cheetah's Gentleman Club and Restaurant in Manhattan and Perfection in Queens.

Now you may wonder why I say some New York cops will be running for the hills. The reason being there seems to be some kind of a very close relationship between the police in this neighborhood and the club. As I live right across the street, I spend alot of time out front smoking a cigarette and I watch the club. I have seen several times very un-natural things happen between the police and the club.

Many times I have observed police cars and police vans pull up to the club and the cops inside go up to the club door and hug the doorman. I always found this very strange. One time I saw the doorman hand a envelope to one of the cops. Hey it could be that they gave the cop free passes or something. I'll let my readers decide. On another time a few weeks ago, two un-marked police cars parked right in front of my building along with a police van and they all went into the club. I knew the cars was police vehicles, as they put their police parking plaques inside the windshield, so they would not get ticketed, as there is no parking in front of my building. They were in the club for hours. I remember thinking that these guys must be on duty and I thought this really sucked if they were in there partying while on duty.

Like I say, I'll let the readers decide. But it seems a very strange and I bet we will hear more on this story.
